Teaching
Teaching
The Institute trains around 600 students in virology every year. Our aim is to impart in-depth knowledge of the molecular biology, structure and evolution of viruses, the complex mechanisms of virus-host interaction and the development, recognition, treatment and prevention of virological diseases.
Our teaching specialisations
- Molecular virology: mechanisms of virus replication, genome strategies and the targeted reprogramming of cellular signalling pathways
- Medical virology: basics of infection epidemiology, virological pathogenesis, antiviral defence mechanisms, modern diagnostics, antiviral therapies and vaccinations
- Molecular and medical virology interlock seamlessly, with different weighting depending on the degree programme, as both areas integrate elements of the other; molecular virology is enriched by clinical-medical aspects, whereas medical virology gains depth through molecular mechanisms.
Study programmes
We teach virology to students of human medicine, dentistry, midwifery, biomedicine, biology/biosciences, biochemistry, pharmacy and food chemistry.
We also provide training in various laboratory and medical professions as part of our teaching programme.
Teaching formats and young scientists
The training programme is research-oriented and offers a wide range of opportunities for practical specialisation:
- Lectures: Lectures, seminars, tutorials and accompanying block practicals
- Research practice: subject-specific laboratory internships (incl. F1 and F2 Master's internships)
- Qualification theses: Supervision of Bachelor's, Master's and dissertation theses
Consultation hours for virology students
Prof Eleni Koutsilieri answers questions about teaching, examinations and internships in the student consultation hour on Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. after prior registration by email
Laboratory insurance for internships
Due to the new European Data Protection Regulation (DSVGO), the Institute of Virology and Immunobiology is unfortunately unable to take out general laboratory insurance for students, which is why you may need to take care of this yourself.
If you do not have your own personal liability insurance or your personal liability insurance refuses to provide written confirmation of liability for "laboratory damage during your studies" in a sufficient amount (see below), we recommend that you take out separate laboratory insurance for students (laboratory internships, Bachelor's and Master's theses, etc.), e.g. via "SIGNAL IDUNA", at the following conditions:
Start of insurance: at the beginning of each semester (1 April or 1 October)
Duration of insurance: 1 semester
Insurance fee/contribution per semester:
12 EUR - simple laboratory insurance
18 EUR - extended laboratory insurance
Validity: Germany-University-wide
Liability for property damage: up to €2,500 with a €50 deductible
Liability for personal injury: up to €2,000,000
The conclusion of this laboratory liability insurance is possible online via the following link.
After taking out the insurance, please print out the corresponding confirmation and present it to Ms Soltan in room 203.
